US Income and Spending / Dashboard
US Spending
Explore federal spending across fiscal years using the U.S. Treasury's Monthly Treasury Statement (MTS) Table 5. Net spending means gross outlays after applicable receipt offsets; it does not subtract government revenue.

Notes and observations
Reading the data
- Compare complete, equivalent periods. Do not compare a partial current fiscal year against a full prior fiscal year.
- Check the dashboard's coverage dates and active filters before drawing conclusions.
- Displayed values are rounded to the nearest billion for clarity.
- Table 5 separates gross outlays, applicable receipts, and net outlays. Applicable receipts offset spending; they are not the same as the government revenue reported in Table 4.
Observations
Dashboard-specific observations will be added as the data is reviewed.
Data sources and processing
These dashboards use MTS Table 5: Outlays of the U.S. Government and MTS Table 4: Receipts of the U.S. Government, published by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Table 5 provides agency and program spending, including gross outlays, applicable receipts, and net outlays. Table 4 provides gross receipts, refunds, and net receipts.
Table 4 net receipts are used to compare government spending against incoming funds. Both tables include current-month, fiscal-year-to-date, and comparable prior-fiscal-year-to-date amounts. Use matching reporting periods when comparing spending and net receipts.
- Official Treasury dataset and Table 5 API endpoint.
- Table 5 field documentation: source fields, reporting periods, and units.
- Table 4 API endpoint: receipts, refunds, and net receipts used for the spending comparison.
- Table 4 field documentation: receipt measures, reporting periods, and units.
- Collection and validation: how reports are downloaded and checked before loading.
- Transformations and provenance: type conversion and source tracking.
- Storage and corrections, exports and analysis, and refresh behavior.
The data pipeline and the published Tableau workbook are separate stages. Pipeline documentation does not verify the workbook's calculations, filters, joins, or refresh history. Check the published view's coverage before interpreting results.
